When it comes to plumbing and piping, using threaded pipe fittings makes it easier to install or modify the piping system. Pipe fittings, also referred to as pipe connectors, are used to join pipes, fittings, and other components together. Threaded pipe fittings like Stainless steel elbows, Pipe tees, Reducing couplings, and Bushings help divert, combine, or reduce the flow of liquids. These connectors come in various sizes, shapes, and materials to serve a specific purpose.
But with a vast array of threaded pipe fittings available in the market, making the right choice can be overwhelming. In this blog post, we will delve into the various types of threaded pipe fittings and their applications so that you can make informed decisions for your next piping project.
What Are Threaded Pipe Fittings?
A threaded pipe fitting is a type of pipe connector used to join and connect pipes in a plumbing system by means of threads. The ends of pipes or fittings are machined with tools called taps and dies to make screw threads. These threads allow pipes, fittings, and other components to be securely joined together by screwing the external threads into the female threads.
Threaded fittings have either male or female threads. A female thread fitting has the threads internally formed with a threaded tool called a tap. A male thread fitting has the threads externally formed with a threaded tool called a die.
- Male threads are also known as external threads (on the outside).
- Female threads are also called internal threads (on the inside).
- The male or external threads are designed to screw into the female or internal threads for a tight and leak-proof connection. Thread types can be tapered or straight.
- Tapered threads, for example, NPT threads (National Pipe Threads).
- Straight threads, for example, BSPP threads (British Standard Pipe Parallel).
- NPT threads are most common in the USA. Since they are tapered, they provide a more secure and tighter seal as compared to parallel threads.
What Are Pipe Fittings Used For?
Threaded pipe fittings are used to connect, extend, reduce, redirect, or terminate threaded ends in a variety of systems where liquids and gases are being transferred.
Extending the line: By joining two pipes together, these fittings can increase the length of the pipe run (Pipe Nipples, Close Nipples, Pipe Couplings, and Unions).
Reducing the line: The thread size can be increased or reduced using a reducing coupling or bushing.
Redirecting the flow: They can also change the direction of the pipe run using a variety of pipe elbows. Flow can be redirected, combined, or diverted by means of a pipe tee.
Terminating the line: Threaded ends can be sealed off and closed using plugs and caps.
Threaded fittings are popular because of their ease of use, making them suitable for systems that may require modifications. You can add to an existing pipe system just by screwing on new components, or take parts away simply by turning the fittings and unscrewing them. Maintenance can be performed in the same easy manner.
Threaded fittings are used in numerous systems where secure, waterproof connections are required, especially where the systems may require some maintenance that involves disassembly and reassembly.
Where Are Threaded Fittings Used?
Threaded fittings come in different sizes, materials, and shapes. As a result, they are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Some of the most common applications include:
Plumbing Systems, Gas distribution, the Oil Industry, HVAC Systems, Chemical Processing and Manufacturing plants, and Irrigation for Agriculture.
Most Commonly Used Threaded Pipe Fittings
Threaded connectors are necessary to join fittings, pipes, and other components in a plumbing system. From hose barb fittings and street elbows to merchant pipe couplings and close nipples, various types of pipe fittings are available in the market to form a secure plumbing system. Below is a list of the most commonly used:
Nipples
Nipples are a type of fitting consisting of a short pipe piece, with male pipe threads on the ends. Nipple fittings are used to join two female pipe threads or female threaded fittings together.
Application: The application of nipple fittings depends on their type, the three most common types are highlighted below:
- Hex Nipple - Has a hex head that provides a surface for a wrench, which increases the grip so that a tighter connection can be made. This hex-shaped head also helps to make loosening easier if disassembly is required.
- Close Nipple - Used where space is limited to join two female pipe threads. They are used in connections where a tighter connection is required and two components need to be connected “close” together, with very little space between them.
- Pipe Nipple - Used to add pipe length to your plumbing system and is available in a variety of lengths.
Couplings
Threaded Pipe Couplings are a type of fitting consisting of a short pipe piece, with female pipe threads on the ends. Coupling fittings are used to join two female pipe threads or female threaded fittings together.
Application: The application of coupling fittings depends on their type, the three most common types are highlighted below:
- Merchant Pipe Coupling - Also called a threaded pipe coupling and is most commonly used to join two pipes together.
- Pipe Union - Used to connect and disconnect pipes and male threaded components. They have the unique advantage of being able to connect and disconnect pipes without any movement or rotation in the pipes.
- Bell Reducer Coupling - Used to connect pipes or fittings of differing sizes.
Elbows
An elbow is a type of pipe fitting with a bend and threads on either end. Elbow fittings are used to connect two pipes together at an angle to facilitate a change of direction in the flow. They create a sharp turn in liquid flow without damaging or stressing the pipes. Elbow pipes are available in different types, including street elbows, 90° pipe elbows, and 45° elbows.
Application - These fittings help connect hoses to water pumps, deck drains, and valves. They direct the flow of liquid in the desired direction.
- Street Elbow - Used to add a 90° bend to a system while saving space.
- Pipe Elbow - Used to add a 90° bend to a piping system.
- 45° Elbow - Used to add a 45° bend to a pipe system.
Pipe Tee Fittings
Pipe Tee fittings or T Fittings are shaped like the letter “T” and have three outlets. Two of the outlets are inline with each other, and one outlet is at 90 degrees. They are commonly used to split or combine the flow of liquid within the pipe and provide a smooth and even flow of liquid.
Application - When the system requires three pipes to be connected at 90 degrees to each other. They are also used for diverting when one inlet is split into two outlets or for mixing when two inlets are combined into one outlet.
Reducer Bushings
A pipe bushing is a threaded fitting with larger male threads on the outside and smaller female threads inside. They are used to increase or decrease the thread size.
Application - Used to decrease a female thread and can also be used to increase a male thread.
Caps and Plugs
Caps and plugs are used at the end connections of the pipe to cover or seal the end. They prevent contamination, dirt, moisture, etc., from entering the threaded opening. These threaded pipe fittings, including hex plugs, square head plugs, and threaded caps, are an easy way to prevent leaking and protect the end of a pipe connection as well as the threads.
Application - A cap is installed onto male threads, whereas a plug is used for male threaded ends.
The Bottom Line
Threaded pipe fittings are a vital part of any piping and plumbing system and ensure it is secure and leak-proof. Every pipe fitting type has its own unique application. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the use and application of each threaded pipe fitting for efficient results.
