A hex nipple is a threaded pipe nipple used in gas handling, fluid transfer and in plumbing systems to connect two female threaded components. It differs from a pipe nipple in that instead of having an unthreaded area between the threads it has a hexagonal nut shaped head, therefore it is also referred to as a hexagon nipple. This characteristic feature of a hex shaped head provides a surface for gripping with a wrench which increases leverage and makes it possible to assemble and disassemble with greater ease. This makes them ideal to situations that may involve disassembly and possible reassembly. Another benefit of this additional leverage is that this threaded nipple can be tightened more securely during installation. The external male threads of this plumbing nipple will thread into female threads of the same size. These NPT nipples for plumbing have National Pipe Threads (NPT threads), which are tapered and form a secure water-proof connection when installed properly.
